I wish all Indians a very
happy Independence Day. 350 millions people won their freedom on this day. Is
this not worth a celebration? We should remember and thank each and every
freedom fighter who had participated in the non-violent fight against the
British. The freedom that we enjoy today is because of these great warriors.
Let’s salute them on this auspicious day.
“Athidhi Devo Bhava” a very
popular verse from Yujjur Veda meaning “Let
thy guest be to thee like unto a god!”. This has been a code of conduct on the
Indian society for centuries. We are taught at home and school that we need to
treat our guests with utmost love, care and affection. No distinction should be
made based on the guest’s caste, color or creed. This practice says a lot about
our culture. It’s not just about how we treat our guests but it describes how
one should treat his fellow citizen with utmost respect.
Has this practice lost its
sheen over the years? These values have eroded over the years. Forget about treating
fellow citizens with high esteem-Do we give any value to the lives of others? We
have defined our new boundaries around ourselves and anything beyond is uncared
for. It’s sad to read the headlines like “More than 60 kids died in UP in a Govt.
medical hospital due to infection and lack of liquid oxygen within a period of
6 days”. This is sheer negligence and lack of respect for the lives of others.
Let’s stop this mentality. We
are all one. Others life is as valuable as ours. Lets honor and care for fellow
citizens. Let’s bring back the Indianism to our hearts and to practice. Jai
Hind!
