The Mission

Venkata Swaroop Pappala

Most of us dream of having a corrupt free society. But even with such ambition, when situation demands, we behave normally and offer bribes. We complain about our politician’s scandalous administration but never complain about our own bribery deeds. The reason for this is that the bribes that we offer are only a couple of hundreds and we do believe that this is the normal procedure and does no harm to the society. We never consider it as a bribe because such things are common these days. Words like bribe, corruption are reserved for illegal dealings worth several thousand crores. Bribes, big or small are very dangerous because corruption has multi-facets. It not only hinders socio-economic development but also deteriorates law and order. Mafia, terrorist organisation etc. are the by-products of corruption. Offering bribes can get your job done quickly. This success encourages you and your neighbours to practice it in all situations. This is the reason why corruption has many patrons. In the progress this becomes a culture. These bad habits will not die with you but will be passed on to your next generation. How do we get rid of this evil culture?

I know that it is very difficult to stop corruption from our side all of a sudden. Let’s do it gradually. Let’s not consider it as a job but as a fundamental duty. In our daily life if a situation demands you to offer bribe, go ahead. But before you make the transaction, just recite these words, SAY NO TO CORRUPTION slowly and clearly. Later go ahead with your deal. But don’t forget to say these words whenever you make an illegal transaction. The first couple of recitation might come directly from your mouth but later it comes from the bottom of your heart. Then you start realizing that you are doing something wrong. No human being can do evil by knowing it is evil. Some people might do it the first …second …….third and believe me there will never be a fourth trial because every human has a strong personality and character. These qualities will not allow us to do these illegal activities. Everybody knows that there is no wrong way to do something good.

Isn’t this easy to practice? As an NRI from Germany, I haven’t come across corruption so much. But it used to be a regular scenario for me at the airport to spend a few euro (bribe) to carry extra expensive goods. I used to do because a few euro doesn’t matter to me. But after realizing the side effects, I practiced the above ideology. Personally, I did this recitation and it took me nearly 50 recitations to realize that I am doing something wrong. I could not offer bribes after this self realization. Now I completely stopped corruption from my side. My life is very pleasant and I am very happy. It’s nice to have my good personality and clean character back. Currently I am trying to educate my neighbours about the evil effects of corruption and promoting my ideology to help others get back their lost pride.

Practice this ideology and make a valuable contribution to your society. Let’s make this world a better place to live.

The mission is very good mission that should hopefully see the real success all over. The technique you have blogged seems practical and simple. But, in theory and practicality there is something needed. First theory should be error proof. Once we have the confidence, follow it(bringing it to praticality). Improve the theory on needy basis. Next, after getting the confidence that the it is acheivable in practise, then I should reach the stage of Alpha release. In alpha release, the theory should be explained to neighbours(or potential candidates who can try it out). Again, take the feedback from them. Understand the difficulties they are facing. Once they also accept that the theory is correct and can be put into praticse, then it goes to Beta release. In this stage, it should be tried on smaller scale, but whom you do not know much. Once you adjust your theory according to the valuable feedbacks from them, then the mission speaks itself.
All in All, Your mission is very appreciable. I guess you have completely tried out the technique in many possible situations. Once you got the confidence, it is the real trick, I suggest you to spread. Otherwise, put your energy in formulating theory/technique that works more effectively.

Good explaination to the by-products of corruptions. But, corruption itself as root causes. Lust, anger, greed are the root causes. An official is taking illegal paths to get more and more and more money. It is his greed that is encouraging him to take the dangerous, illegal, unethical paths. The cause of greed is his lust to enjoy. Enjoy position, enjoy wealth, enjoy senses(such as: 1)Sense of tongue: go to good restaurants,2)Sense Of smell: buy costly perfumes,3)Sense of sight:do world tours, watching movies, cricket, etc 4)Sense of touch: illicit sex enjoyment 5)Sense of hearing: listening to unethical speeches, romours, un appealing music, etc). When lust is not fulfilled, it leads to anger and greed. And greed is leading to CORRUPTION.
So, switch to control corruption is itself depending on giving good education, as you said.

Amazing mission/idea, will try to follow this for my next three weeks stay in India and let you know the feedback.
Just one more point which is very true from your post is, that we have to finally stop blaming the govt. officials, politicians for corruption, and start taking responsibilities ourselves. It is us citizens, who are more responsible for having it rampant in society. Even if a sizeable part of our population follows all the govt. regulation, get well informed about the laws, and dares to take few extra efforts, we are not very far from achieving a society which will be far less corrupt and efficient, and it will not take much time…
But don’t hope that on one fine day, all the govt./private officials will leave chance to earn few extra bucks if you are ready to offer them so…You cannot expect a traffic policemen, who just earn 6000 Rs. After working whole day on a sunny polluted traffic filled crossing to stop taking the money if offered.
So the whole point is that onus is on us to remove the corruption, on nobody else, if we remove the corruption, authorities will have much more money to reform the whole country and we as people who are living outside can feel much more proud for ourselves… Great start Swaroop... I am with you 100%..

Your mission Statement is meaningful and sensible,

We all know saying something is easier than doing it. You’re asking us to do the easy part, interesting.

Not sure how achievable it is with your approach. It took around 50 times for you to make it (staying at home few days in a year). How many times a government officer or a civil contractor need to say ?? .. may be 10000. If your saying the same thing that many times that proves that you are very much used to saying it. Ex: We pray in front of god saying so many good sentences, how many of us follow them in our daily life.

I think it is right step in right direction; It might need some learning’s and adoptions here and there based on participants feedback.

We are living in a Global world, I think corruption is not only the problem in India, It is the case in different parts of the world.. May be you can ask some South American people to practice the same. Try to hear there feedback. It might help.
I give my fully support to achieve "Say No To corruption"

Its a great "Mission" which is possible. Corruption is not a compulsory element to live as five basic elements of life for a human being. So without corruption a life can go peacefully and happily. In some suituations we do bribe or corrupt for short term happiness, but once if we try without that we will get life time happiness.
This mission will bring the peaceful society life. So why don't we follow for a better future. For any good thing there should be some initiator. So there is a initiator(Swaroop) to have a better society. I will encourage you, follow you and be part of your Mission.

First I want to say Jai Ho "Just Say No To Corruption"

The blog is informative but I think it need to have some technicality, what I mean is, in case I encounter any situation of bribing... Of course my first attempt will be avoid bribing, but if I had to bribe I will do... but I should not take that granted and have to take some action on that person.
so what I mean to ask in the above scenario is ...
I know that you have given some links to fight for that, but what I want in the blog is clear approach
1. Whom to contact in first place.
2. If things not settled there what is the next step?

These things will help the people, I know that we have just started and even we need to know all these things. Just a foresight

Also we need to tell people on where we can stop bribing (till they get used to) as they may not be aware where they can stop bribe
as you mentioned in the blog stop bribing in the airport for over luggage, few areas like this in the blog will certainly help people think in that way.

Agreed, swaroop. As a part of my fundamental duties ,I never offer bribes to any one at any cost. Will abide to "No to Corruption".

Lets all do "Say no to corruption" by forming a group and educate others the ill-effects of corruption.

Very interesting part is how we can eradicate this. What more steps needs to be followed...

Sure! will be a part of your mission, swaroop. Never give up the mission until the success is reached.

I have gone through the mission statements part of the blog .. The suggestions you gave very really good that people should keep reminding themselves not to accept bribe.. It is also true that motives for taking bribes are diverse .. If you remember in earlier days, people used to put god's photos all over the house.. Atleast one photo in each room .. This helped them to remember God whenever they look at the photo .. Similarly If people can put a caption of "Say no to bribes" in a place in the house or office (in their cubibles )where they can see most often , i guess it will be good remainder for everyone ..

As far as I am concerned, the only bribe i ever gave was to one office fellow in the JNTU university to get my certificates fast .. I guess i shouldnt have done that ..

I guess i am going to implemetn what ever suggestion i gave earlier - "to put caption in a well noticed place of the house" and see to that atleast my family members DONT GIVE bribes to anyone ..(they never take bribes :D) ......

You can post my comments in your blog because i dont have access to do it in my office ...

Its a nice awareness you are trying to bring among people .. Keep it up .. I will put in my share of work whereever reqd .. Keep me posted..

Idea is very good and blog is also very helpful. This mission needs to contribute everyone in the socity. What I think is in India because of huge population they can't wait moretime for anything the people who are rich they will try to disconnect the procedures and corruption will start.

Indian education system is also not much gud, who needs Tippusulthan and Akbar history :-))

They have to put more things related to our government system and why we are paying taxes and what is corruption these things.

In book also they will tell you will get vote at 18 or 21 years that's it, they will not wrote more why we need to vote what is the impact if we choose bad people in the elections.

They have to put some topics on corruption in our education system from 8th standard to Inter .

Thanks for your thoughts.. everyone think to do like this but no one will start :-)

i heartfully appreciate ur mission....as u said it is possible to say no to corruption....after raeding ur blog..jus one incident which happened two days back flashed in my mind ...two days back i hav gone to hospital as manasa is ill....i jus want to show report to doc...after finishing i came out and getting raedy to leave...meanwhile the person who is assisting doc came out and asked for money...he said i intensionally sent u in first and u r leaving without giving me anything..i jus thought for a while why these guys seek money to do their jobs...but still i gave him...iam jus selfish thinking may b this will b usefull when i come next time....one more simple example is jus to get our original degree certificate we hav to bribe that person..at that time itself i thought y these people doesnt do their job sincerely.....personally i dont like my things getting done by bribing....but still it's going..i always try to avoid this even now...but when it is some serious problem or urgent work iam becomming helpless....i dnt know abt other countries but india is totally corrupted...and one way we r encouraging...may ba intensionally sometimes..may being helpless sometimes...
after reading blog...i felt yes we can do something to stop this corruption...i know it's not so easy...and i dont say it's impossible even.....we can give a try.....offcourse seriously....and i agree with ur mission.......i'll try to do my best..........

hey swaroop.... happy to see your mission....
to take bribe is something we can avoid, but to stop giving bribes is not always possible..
if you do not give bribe, you said the risk is delay in our task... In many cases it is not so, the risk is actually our task never being done..

i have an example.. my passport looks a bit old now, but is still in good condition. At the hyd airport, one of the employee was looking at my passport and kept it with her. She says it is old and dirty and that she is sealing the passport. After 5 min fight, I came to understand her intention, and asked her if she expects some money.. she quietly nodded, and i added a 500rs note, and all done.

The risk if I had continued to fight with her is, she can easily damage 1 or 2 papers during this handling, and continue to claim that my passport is damaged! ..

I want to make this point clear that there are several and several occassions where we cannot help, but to pay the bribe..

You were mentioning that you never thought of bribery in Germany. The reason why we do not think of bribery in Germany is because it doesnt work here. It doesnt mean that we turn good in Germany.

These countries are rich, and the governmental rules are strict. The people are usually already self sufficient with their salaries. So the corruption in these countries is less.

Salaries of governmental employees in developing and poor countries is low, which is the root cause of corruption.

There is very little that a normal Indian citizen can do. All we can do is to stop asking bribe. But we cannot stop giving bribe in certain situations.

The solution I foresee is
- more strict government policies against corruption
- higher wages
- A specialized approachable government authority, whom you can trust to make complaints against anti-corruption.

....next time I comeacross a situation where someone asks me for bribe, I might be in a cornered position again. so I might again give the bribe...
But then I would like to have the contact details of a govt authority, who will take my complaint seriously and who will also keep me anonymous.

This is a noble mission. I've seen your comments and from that of your friends and anti corruption crusaders.
I think of 2 options.
i) Schooling:
In school we are taught on all subjects varying from science, history, arts, sports and moral science etc. The government feels that all the above subjects are essential to be inculcated in the young minds.
However there is no subject or else no chapter in any subject which deals with corruption and its impact on the society.
There should be a subject in school upto 12th atleast which focuses on this evil.
In this way, today's children who will be ruling the nation tomorrow will not tread this path of corruption. This will also drive them to root out the corruption in the society.
ii) This is bringing sensational movement in the society. Again it should be non-violent. A movement strong enough to bring the government to it's knees. This could not be possible by a single person or a leader however strong he/she might be. This should be driven by strong will & emotions of the people reinforced with strong backing from a leader.
This is not impossible. This could be possible if all like minded people with same emotions strike the chord at the same time.
As an example, we have witnessed the anti arrack movement in early 90s. The movement made the 2 political parties bow to people's wishes.
This may not happen at all. But when this happens we should step in and join the movement.
You have wonderfully come up with ideas in .
I'm always available in this endeavour of yours to build modern India which is free of corruption...
